Responsibilities Essential Functions Interprets communication between the staff and non-English speaking population. Translates written educational materials and documents in accordance with readability guidelines. Follows up with the non-English speaking population to inquire about the status of individual patients and answers questions. Assists the non-English speaking population in completing medical, financial and related forms. Escorts non-English speaking population to the appropriate service area. May provide patient education and discharge planning in conjunction with nursing and rehabilitation staff. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above. Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret and translate verbal and written text. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills. Ability to work independently in an efficient, productive manner maintaining composure and sensitivity in accordance with the environment of health care services. Required Qualifications Associate's degree in a foreign language, or equivalency. Preferred Qualifications Qualifications (Preferred) Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare processes. Previous experience providing interpretation or translation services in a healthcare environment. Completion of a recognized medical interpreter training program. National medical interpreter certification is preferred. Specific qualifications may vary based on the department, patient population, and operational needs of the position. Working Conditions and Physical Demands Employees must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. This position is primarily performed in a healthcare environment and may require prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the facility. The employee may occasionally lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects weighing up to 10 pounds. The position may require travel between patient care areas and exposure to the routine environmental conditions of a healthcare setting. Night-shift work, including weekends and holidays, may be required based on departmental needs.
